There's a new Dentyne gum commercial that makes me cringe. Have you seen it? It starts with a couple in a parked car, about to kiss when the girl stops the guy, "Wait, wait...you have something, right?" Yeah he's packing.

Next shot, guy nervously making a purchase at the drug store. Clerk gives him a knowing look and a smirk. Getting his protection, he is.

Last shot - guy asks his sleeping roommate to "help him out". Roommate opens nightstand drawer and tosses him a a package of...gum. Bummer. I made the comment to my bf about how I wished this could have really been a condom commercial because it would have been brilliant, hip and possibly effective!

I happened across a post at TheFrisky where Annika points out that during whatever she was watching, they broadcasted a commercial for birth control immediately after this gum commercial. The birth control commercial was images of a woman taking the responsibility to have her protection. (click on theFrisky link to see the commercial)

What's the deal here? Why do we have to settle for safe sex advice through the metaphor of fresh breath? Then make it the woman's responsibility to be protected? I'm disturbed. How about you?

I am having quite the time trying to figure out some of the latest commercials (altho I have not seen the new gum commercial yet). They all seem to 'insinuate' some kind of sexual situation (i.e. the Axe stinky hair stuff for men. She leans him over the counter to run her fingers thru his hair?)

I am confused by FCC standards (who I assume has the final say-so on commercials that air). Either they are going to allow sex or they arent. Are they so controlled by the moral majority and what they say, they let things go on TV then pull them when somebody bitches? Or is it the classic...'he with the most money can air whatever the hell they want'?

Either they need to allow porno to air or they need to only have bible and sermon-preaching commercials...

Thats my 2 cents...

Thank God they have them out in the open now where the kids can get at them without the embarrassment I had to suffer the first time. I'd been known at our local pharmacy since we moved into the neighborhood and 'rubbers,' were always kept behind the counter, out reach, supposedly to protect our youth and you couldn't get to them without assistance. I asked the old guy behind the counter for a pack of Trojans, the only brand I knew about. He asked me what size? He meant a three pack or a dozen but I'd never bought them before so I wasn't sure and I answered, "Medium, I guess." He and the other smart ass behind the counter got a good laugh out of that. Then trying to be cool, I asked him what he recommended for lubrication and the old goat said, "Bardahl at the auto parts store next door." From then on I went to another pharmacy far from home. But I wasn't old enough to drive. HHH
