The adult industry has always been one of the first in line to try new technology. When the internet was in its infancy, sex and porn were paving the way to the future. Adult sites were one of the first to figure out how to safely exchange money for content online.

NPR's All Things Considered has a 5 minute audio clip about the popularity of sex and porn online, as well as a primer for those of you who didn't realize how cutting edge the industry has been.

Check it out at High On Sex (really NSFW) or go straight to NPR and read the corresponding article.

"The Internet has been sexualized even before it was the Internet," she says. Back in the days of bulletin board systems, some people would exchange what was known as "ASCII porn."

"This was essentially people using characters by hand on their keyboard to create what look like explicit images, and then send them to each other through bulletin board systems," she says.

Back when we radio hams were using teleprinters / Teletype to communicate we would send "pinup" pictures back and forth - some taking as long as 30 minutes to transmit (this was in the days of 60 WPM (45 baud).
I still have a disk full of ASCII pictures (they used to be on punched paper tape).  I was even interviewed by Playboy for an article a few years ago dealing with this.
