DRUNKEN dad-to-be James Whiting got more than he bargained for after strolling into a shop wearing a strap-on sex toy.
The shocked woman assistant behind the counter slapped him in the face.

And his "practical joke" landed him before a court.

Whiting, 20, staggered into the Londis Store in North Road, Wingate, with the sex toy strapped to the front of his body.

A court heard that when the traumatised female shop assistant asked him to leave he became abusive.

The assistant eventually came from behind the counter and slapped him in the face before he fled, the court heard.

Whiting was later arrested, and claimed he was drunk and could not recall the incident until his friends told him about it. He said it was a practical joke.

Lynsey Armstrong, prosecuting at Peterlee Magistrates' Court, said: "It was around 7.30pm when the defendant entered the Londis store wearing a vibrator which was strapped to the front of his body.

"The assistant said he appeared to be drunk and was staggering around the shop and smelled of alcohol.

"She asked him to leave, but he swore at her and continued to be abusive.

"After around 10 minutes, the assistant came round from behind the counter and slapped him to the side of the face to get him to leave the store."

Whiting, of Beachdale Close, Wingate, admitted using behaviour which could cause alarm or distress in the incident on September 13, last year.

He also pleaded guilty to breaching a community order, failing to surrender to custody and the theft of a bottle of wine in a separate incident.

Jaxon Taylor, mitigating, said: "He accepts he went into the store and that he did it as a practical joke, and that he was in the company of other males who were outside the store."

Mr Taylor added: "He is due to start full-time employment and is getting ready to be a father. He has never been in custody before."

Whiting was at the time subject to a community order for a previous assault conviction and his latest offences made him in breach of the order.

For this and his latest crimes magistrates sentenced him to 20 weeks in custody, suspended for 18 months.

Magistrates also imposed an 18-month community order with 200 hours unpaid work and ordered him to pay £50 compensation.

And the moral to this story is "Not only Americans walk around acting like DICKS in public."
