Have you ever wondered about the origins of Masturbation Month? If you're too young to remember, there was a brief and wondrous time in the 90's when our very own Surgeon General referenced masturbation as a -gasp- healthy activity!

Joycelyn Elders was a true progressive in every sense of the word, speaking fearlessly on such subjects as drug legalization, contraception in schools, and yes, masturbation as a low-risk alternative to sex for teens - inflaming an already hysterical right-wing to a fever pitch.

After a speech at the United Nations World AIDS Day in 1994, an audience member asked Elders about masturbation’s potential for discouraging early sex activity. She answered,“I think it is something that is part of human sexuality and a part of something that perhaps should be taught.”

This frank message proved to be too much for even the Clinton administration and she was asked to leave her post. That's when the good folks at San Francisco's Good Vibrations decided to find a way to celebrate Elder's short tenure and promote masturbation awarness and education. The result? Masturbation Month!

Please take a moment to rub one out for those fearless sex pioneers who fought to take the stigma out of self-lovin!
