About 20 protesters, some dressed in full-body, black-leather bondage outfits and others carrying signs that read, “Support equal rights for kinky people,” gathered in the rear parking lot of Montclair’s Municipal Building last night, Aug. 10.

As a regularly scheduled Planning Board meeting took place inside the Township Council Chambers, the assembly outside protested local officials’ mid-June shutdown of a members-only club that held “play parties” in a basement dungeon at Dressing For Pleasure, a fetish-wear boutique near the corner of Bloomfield Avenue and Elm Street.

Officials said the parties, sometimes drawing crowds of up to 50 or 60 attendees, were an unauthorized use of the basement, and they ordered that all fetish and bondage furniture and equipment be removed from the space.

But the shop owner says he is trying to provide a meeting place for people with alternative lifestyles, and the club operated under a strict no-sex and no-sexual-contact policy.
